For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that well.
— Psalm 139:13-14
How much is a torn, tattered, stained, and crumpled dollar bill worth?
It’s worth $1.
In fact, if a dollar bill is torn in half and you have at least half of it left, it is still worth $1.
We as humans are a lot like this dollar bill. We go through hard times, we fail, we make mistakes, we suffer. We go through things that seem to tear our hearts apart … and these hardships in life often cause us to lose self-worth. Recent research shows that 85% of people have a low self-worth.
Just because we feel worthless does not mean that we are. When God created us– when He knit us together in our mothers’ wombs, He designed us to be who we are and gave us great worth. We are valuable because God created us with value, and that value never changes. In Isaiah 43:4, God speaks through the prophet saying, “you are precious in my eyes and honored, and I love you.”
We are precious, honored, and loved because God chose us despite our failures and shortcomings. If you struggle with self-worth, remember that your identity is not based in your accomplishments, but in your identity as a child of God.
