You Who Witness
All who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. – Galatians 3:27
Every year one of The Church of the Cross’ shining moments is watching dozens of congregants wade down to the May River to be baptized. Many others join them as they recommit their lives to Jesus Christ.
For hundreds of years people from all walks of life have been baptized in this beautiful and ancient river. At the heart of Baptism and Recommitment is repentance and faith in Christ. It is one of the mysteries of God … we go down in the water one kind of person and come out of it someone new. It is a work of the Holy Spirit we take by faith.
One of the questions in the Book of Common Prayer Baptismal Liturgy is not just to those being Baptized, but to God’s people who are the Church. “Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?” The congregation responds: “We will.” No man is an island; we are better if we are together.
I’ll see you all down at the river on Sunday, July 30th at 3:30PM.
