Some of my favorite childhood memories come from the time I spent with the men of the church. Almost weekly, the church I grew up in hosted dinners, men’s groups, and other times of fellowship. The men took me under their wing, and I would help do the dishes in the kitchen or sing with them in the choir. Though I did not realize it at the time, these men were my mentors. They didn’t teach me much about the Bible, but they gave me a Godly example to follow.
The idea of mentoring others can be intimidating. But mentoring can be incredibly simple — all it requires is an invitation to do life with someone. The men of my childhood made a significant difference on my life and helped me discern a call toward pastoral ministry. You can make the same difference in a child’s life!
This August we will be starting our annual Confirmation Classes for youth. Confirmation is a survey of the basics of our faith. At the end of the Confirmation journey, each youth “confirms” that they believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They are then confirmed as members of the Church through the laying on of hands by the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina. A new addition to this process is that we are recruiting adult Christian members of The Church of the Cross to serve as Confirmation mentors. We want to pair every student with an adult who will attend each of the sessions with the student, will have conversations with the student and share their story of faith, and will support the student by praying for them.
This is an exciting opportunity for different generations to get to know each other and to help each other grow in faith. If you are interested in being a Confirmation Mentor, please contact me at nweaver@thechurchofthecross.net.
Blessings,
