The Christmas season is upon us. I know this because people are driving more aggressively, my mailbox is stuffed on a daily basis with magazines I never ordered and I’m busier than any other time in the year.
I remember again the occasion of why I am so busy during this Christmas season. It all began with the birth of Jesus Christ centuries ago. Christmas has taken many forms for people and much of it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. Santa Claus, Christmas trees, parties, lights, Nat King Cole, holiday colors . . . all things that usher in the season. None of these things are particularly bad, unless it pulls us away from the real meaning of Advent. Jesus said, “For this reason I was born, and this reason I came into the world.” (John 18:37)
Are we seeking Jesus during this Advent? Are we remembering that Christmas is not something that can be bought or created? The real meaning of Christmas can only be found in the promise with greatest gain: the Person of Christ.
