What Was I Thinking?!

What Was I Thinking?!

I have a different view of Christmas than in years past. Lisa has always done the Christmas shopping for our children's gifts. It has gotten increasingly harder as our family has grown. Last year I made suggestions of better ways she could shop for the children's gifts. She countered by saying "Alright then, next year you can handle all the Christmas shopping." Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I agreed. This clearly ranks up there as one of my life's dumbest decisions. I will never do this again! The pressure is enormous! Now I understand why so many people are stressed.

Even through the overdone commercialism that has created much of our Christmas stresses, I remember again the occasion of why we're so busy. It all began with the birth of Jesus Christ centuries ago. Christmas has taken many forms for people and much of it has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. Santa Claus, Christmas trees, parties, lights, Nat King Cole, holiday colors; these are all things that usher in the season. None of these things are particularly bad unless it pulls us away from the real meaning of Advent. Jesus said, "For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world."

Remember Jesus during this Advent and remember that Christmas is not something that can be bought or created. The real meaning of Christmas can only be found in the promise with greatest gain: the Person of Christ.

Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever!
