The High Cost of Sacrifice

This past Memorial Day I remembered, as I do every year, the life of Lance Corporal Jeffrey Bruce Owen. Growing up Bruce lived next door to us and was a large part of our family. My dad being a former Marine brought Bruce before our Church Congregation the day before he enlisted, we were all so proud of him. I also remember when the Marines showed up at the Owens home to tell them Bruce had been killed along with 240 other Marines by a suicide bomber in Beirut, Lebanon. Thirty-Three years later it is still one of the saddest days of my life. In late October of 1983 I first learned what an older generation largely knows and a younger seems to have forgotten. There is a high cost to Freedom, that has been attained because blood's been shed by so many great Americans.

As Dwight Eisenhower said when staring down evil, "if we do not offer the sacrifice in blood now, we will all pay dearly with added gallons later. So if some must die, it is in a worthy cause."

There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.                     John 15:13
