Thomas Cranmer was a great Reformer of the Christian faith and the author of the original Book of Common Prayer. There is an ancient prayer that has become part of the Palm Sunday Liturgy.
Almighty and ever living God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Out of all the collects prayed during the church calendar this one touches me the most. It is so short and concise as it touches on Jesus' love for each of us and for all of mankind, how His life on earth defined humility and taught us to follow His example of patience in the midst of suffering, and there is no Resurrection without suffering and the Cross... in a small way it's the Passion in one prayer.
As we approach Holy Week, include this collect as a part of your devotionals:
"Mercifully grant that I may follow the example of Jesus' patience and also share in His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Glorify Him and enjoy Him forever,
