jrJohann Sebastian Bach - today the world knows him as probably the most brilliant musical composer that has ever lived. Many however don't know what propelled him to write some of the greatest music in history. The letters SDG are found in nearly every piece of music he ever wrote. Soli Deo Gloria, Latin for "to the Glory of God Alone" was Bach's supreme goal in life. His chief end was to Magnify and Glorify God with the overwhelming musical gift that God gave him. Whenever he began new music, he bowed his head and prayed, "Jesus, help me show your glory through the music I write. May it bring you joy even as it brings joy to your people."

2106What is even more stunning, while producing some of the greatest works in history, very few recognized it. Constantly passed over for jobs, contracts not renewed, cast aside, he was unfazed. He didn't create his masterpieces for fame; his desire was to make famous the one who created it all!

Here we are 250 years later, the world now sees what everyone missed in his day, that he was a musical genius. However, his greatest legacy was not his musical gifts, but his complete and utter reliance upon God. Soli Deo Gloria... "to the Glory of God Alone", may his chief end be ours as well.

Glorify God and enjoy him forever,

Pastor Jonathan
