"That the Bible is full of murderers, cowards, adulterers and mercenaries used to shock me. Now it's a source of great comfort to me."
~ A quote from Bono, the lead singer for U2

jonathan167I too felt as Bono did for many years, the shock of the Old Testament and yet the longer I walk with Christ and study the scriptures, the more I am at peace with the great tensions. I too find "great comfort" in realizing that even people of God are "murderers, cowards, adulterers, and mercenaries."

The Bible doesn't excuse sin or condone it, as they say, "it is what it is." In the end, we're all great sinners in need of a great Savior. In the end, we only get to heaven because of what Jesus Christ has done for us. It's all Jesus...and I suppose that's the point, it is the essence of Christianity.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." Ephesians 2:8-9

It should be our aim to live our lives in a way that pleases God, but our eternity does not depend on it. The comfort lies in the simple truth, that even when we stumble and fall, we know we are great sinners in the hands of a great and loving God. Therefore we can live our lives with humility and confidence, because Jesus Christ has come to give his life as a ransom for many.

Glorify God and Enjoy Him Forever!
